World building is very useful guide in creating your world in the story that you’re writing. Basically, it is the essence and the foundation of science fiction or fantasy story and also, basis of other genres. Good world building can lead to richness in your writing while giving valuable information to your readers allowing them to know deeper the characters in the story and the plot lines. How writers must proceed on the world building to their fiction then? In order to become more aware of this, we will split it into three major points which is imaginary worlds, alternate reality and actual locations.
With the imaginary worlds, the construction of the whole fictional universes is found mainly in fantasy genres wherein alternate reality, it is re-imagining the details of our present world which is actually popular to writers whose focus is mostly in science fiction and last but not the least, actual locations or the invocation of real place of our world that’s used in novels without adding any fantasy elements.
Believe you don’t, among the different types of world-building for authors are being able to create an imaginary world. In most cases, it is what used in science fiction and fantasy where the writer is thinking of everything in their world from the very start which can be anything from geography, lore, language, history, characters, politics, religion and social customs.
The thought of creating all these elements in forming the fictional world can be daunting and deciding where to start the story is almost an unimaginable feat. If you like to have some inspiration, then it will be ideal to check the universe built by some of the famous authors similar to J.R.R Tolkien, J.K. Rowling.
We all know that not all writers are as imaginative, talented and creative as those two above and will be able to create a functional language but at least, this gives them a head start. As a matter of fact, there is a technique that can b used in building your imaginary world and that is by finding which aspect you are fond the most. Never underestimate this for the reason that this can help in building your story and at the same time, describe your world in which your readers will be captivated.
Sooner or later, you’ll get the hang of it and it would help in convincing people of everything you worked for; you just need to be consistent in your world. One way of doing this is by asking a set of question related to different elements of your world. Do this exercise as if you’re describing your country or home to someone else who knows totally nothing about it.
